The House on Wednesday rejected legislation to continue funding the federal government past the Oct. 1 deadline, inching the government one step closer to a shutdown just six weeks before Election Day—though lawmakers predict Congress will reach an agreement to avoid any electoral consequences.

Republican controlled US House representatives is voting on legislation today. The legislation contains an important bill which is constitute of tighter rules based on voting, which can lead to an argument with the Democratic majority Senate.

The deadline for a potential government shutdown is September 30 if lawmakers fail to agree on a budget. However, the chance of a shutdown is currently viewed as low.
